LEVENMOUTH SCHOOL REACHES NEW MILESTONE
A new state of the art high school and community college has reached a major milestone. The high school is being delivered by Hub East Central Scotland for Fife Council.
The completion of the school building’s main structure was marked by a topping out ceremony with Angela Constance MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning.
The new £42.5 million school is expected to bring significant educational, economic and social benefits to the Levenmouth community. Situated in the corner of what will become a gateway to a regeneration area, it is being developed in tandem with a new Fife College building in order to provide a campus approach. This will open up an even closer relationship between secondary and further education.
Education Secretary, Angela Constance, said: “This is an exciting milestone for the new secondary school for Levenmouth and I’m delighted I could be part of it. The new school will be a fantastic environment for pupils to learn in and will provide modern facilities the whole community will enjoy for generations to come. I’m pleased the Scottish Government could provide more than £25 million through our Scotland’s Schools for the Future programme. It is encouraging that a new college building is being developed in tandem with the school to provide a campus approach to open up a closer relationship and create opportunities between secondary and further education. I look forward to visiting the school when it opens to pupils next year.”
The new school is being built on the grounds of the existing Buckhaven High School and is due to open in August 2016, providing accommodation for up to 1800 pupils with safe, secure and well-designed academic spaces that are complemented by a variety of facilities for community wide use.
Fife Council Leader, David Ross, said: “The £200 million plus programme is a huge investment from the council in the future of our young people in Fife. With investment from the Scottish Government and assistance from the Scottish Futures Trust we are building schools across the Kingdom which are ground breaking in their design and function. In Levenmouth we will see the merger of two excellent schools into one, with all the advantages that can bring.”
Neil McCormick, Chief Executive, Hub East Central Scotland, added: “We are delighted that the project is making such good progress and look forward to delivering a high quality building ready for pupils next year. Our key strength is to deliver value for money solutions of the highest standard that meet the needs of the community and Levenmouth School is an excellent example of this.”
The school is being built by BAM Construction and will accommodate 1800 pupils when complete.
