Striking new schools open to pupils in Burntisland and Alloa

The first new primary schools which have been delivered by hub East Central have opened to pupils in Burntisland and Alloa, with both schools demonstrating high standards of curriculum related design suited to modern teaching methods, standards and education strategies. The impressive schools provide accommodation for a total of 1340 pupils in primary and nursery streams when school terms reopened in September 2014.

The successful completion of the new schools has followed on from nearly two years of planning, design and construction inputs from multi-disciplinary teams from both the public and private sectors.

In Burntisland, a hubco design team comprising Fife Council (Architectural Design), Hulley & Kirkwood (M&E & BREEAM), Cundall (Structural & Civil) created a visually striking and inspiring learning environment; in completing the construction works, contractor BAM employed several local suppliers and local tradesmen to complete the £10.8M investment. Burntisland Primary school is presently aiming to secure a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, which is a highly coveted target in the new BRE scoring scheme for new buildings.

Redwell Primary School in Alloa is a two stream BREEAM ‘Very Good’ primary school featuring an array of innovative learning spaces and design features. The school was designed by Keppie (Architects), Wallace Whittle (M&E), Ramboll (BREEAM) and Blyth & Blyth (Civil & Structural). Robertson Construction completed this £8M investment in August 2014.

hubco has strived to ensure a high quality built environment is complemented with the wider social and community benefits that has seen several sponsored training and apprenticeship programmes. Initially a significant 85% of the works packages across the two projects has seen at least 1 local third sector organisation on the tender list. Furthermore, both projects have seen a near 80% local workforce employed to deliver the construction contracts.
