£35M Levenmouth High School moves on site

The new Levenmouth High School for Fife Council’s catchment areas in Buckhaven and Kirkland has taken its first steps into construction with a formal turf cutting event to mark the occasion. hub East Central Scotland (hubco) has now signed an agreement to enable its Tier 1 Contractor BAM Construction to undertake certain Pre Construction enabling works on site. This is a significant initial step in achieving the Council’s vision to develop a state of the art school with the potential to bring significant educational, economic and social benefits to the Levenmouth community. In the following weeks and months, hubco and its supply chain will make a full application to undertake the main construction activity through a Design Build Finance and Maintain (DBFM) contract with Fife Council. Subject to the council’s approval hubco will commence construction on site in August 2014. The 137 week construction programme will see a total investment of approximately £35M, a significant proportion of which is expected to be channelled through local supply chains and their personnel. hubco is also currently pursuing options to develop a proposal to co-locate Fife College’s Levenmouth campus alongside the new Levenmouth High School. The joint campus has the potential to address the gap between the needs and demands of the local industry and the shortage of skills for these industries, particularly from school leavers. It is presently anticipated that should these proposals be approved, construction programmes for both facilities will be integrated to allow student entry into the joint campus in Summer 2016, and the demolition of the adjacent school and grass pitches to be completed by Summer 2017.
